Essential Care Tips for Night Blooming Jasmine

by Cheryl Szczarba 04/21/2024

Night blooming jasmine is a favorite addition to patios, window boxes and trellises for its glossy leaves and sweet-scented flowers. Jasmine can enhance summer nights with its pleasant aroma and grows beautifully in containers or climbing on structures. If you're interested in growing night blooming jasmine yourself, here are some essential care tips to know:

Room to Grow

One especially important thing to know about night blooming jasmine is that the roots need a large amount of space to spread out. Without enough space, you'll notice stunted growth. Experts recommend planting each jasmine plant at least eight feet apart to provide ample room to grow.

Night blooming jasmine is a fast grower and can easily reach 8 to 10 feet tall when given a sturdy structure to climb. It's perfect for training onto a trellis, pergola or fence to create a sweet-smelling and attractive privacy screen for your yard.

Temperature Needs

The perfect location to plant your jasmine is somewhere protected from extreme cold and heat. All jasmine varieties prefer full sun, but will suffer in prolonged high temperatures. Plant your jasmine where it will get as much light as possible during the day but still be shielded from direct sunlight in the warmer parts of the year. If you grow night blooming jasmine in a container, it's best to bring it indoors before the first frost.

Pruning & Maintenance

Since it's a fast grower, night blooming jasmine might need regular grooming to keep its shape and produce healthy new growth. After flowering, prune out any old vine shoots to help it produce new flowers the following spring.

Night blooming jasmine needs deep and regular watering once the plant is established. If growing in a pot, check the soil and water if it's dry. Jasmine planted in the ground is more drought-tolerant than when planted in containers, but check the soil moisture if the weather is hot.

Night blooming jasmine can make a wonderful addition to your outdoor space. Remember these tips if you're considering planting some of your own.
